Reviews of TurboTax Deluxe Federal + e-File + State (2010)
[Amazon.com] TurboTax Deluxe helps find and maximize deductions. The software includes all the features in TurboTax Basic and guides customers step-by-step through mortgage interest, charitable contributions, education expenses, medical expenses and more. Not only does TurboTax Deluxe show taxpayers how to qualify for deductions, it also tracks how much they have saved. The software also includes ItsDeductible--the "bluebook" for donated items that helps accurately value your donations in compliance with IRS guidelines.
The software is about the same as it has been in years' past. And, as in years' past, if you have not strictly set up your Quicken categories the way TurboTax expects to see them, you will experience some incorrect entries when you import from Quicken. Similarly, TurboTax does a pitiful job importing stock option trades from Quicken, primarily using the real Date Acquired info as the Date Sold and then leaving the Date Acquired field blank, so you have to manually go in and change these 2 dates for each of your transactions. Still, it eventually gets the job done and is much easier than trying to fill out paper forms. And I guess I have just become numb to the cutesy "We just saved you $7 in taxes!" gibberish and the plugs to upgrade to a more expensive version every time you have a tax circumstance that would prompt Intuit to want you to upgrade.
As an aside, I too would like to know how two reviewers who were Intuit beta testers came up with identically worded phrases in their reviews.
Quite frankly, tax software is now indepensable for me - - - transfer of profile info to the new year, transfer of state carryover payments, carry forward losses, IRA cummulative contributions, etc., integration with State filings, etc. It cuts down the overhead time.
TuboTax made a big mistake on my 2009 return. The program incorrectly calculated the taxable value of a lump sum payment. This mistake cost me $245 in taxes and penalties. Others have posted notes on TurboTax Community boards about this mistake. Intuit provides ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to contact them about an issue. All you can do is either go to their pre-formatted help guides or post a note on the Community board. So, I am done with TurboTax after 10 years of use. I do not recommend TurboTax because they provide no way for their own customers to contact them directly - no phone number, no email, no mailing address. Nothing. So, good luck with that.
I have used TurboTax probably since it was first available, except for the year they tried to hijack the consumers and we went to TaxCut by the 10's of thousands! They are capable of getting the message.
Again this year, TurboTax is moving more toward hand holding if you allow it, thankfully, there exist the option to bypass most of it to directly enter new data while viewing last years data.
Assuming they can get all the last minute changes into updates to us ASAP, it will maintain the position of the most user friendly tax program available.
It has been my plan to drop the discontinued MS Money in order to maintain records more easliy aligned with Turbo Tax. Alas, are we talking about the same company? Quicken, at least in the basic versions adequite to my needs is a total disaster. There are a multitude of reviews available to prove this point. I suggest that anyone considering Quicken to purchase the bundled version, that way when you toss it in the trash you will loose about $25 less.
Incidentally, 2007 MS Money actually becomes history the end of January. MS has released for download, a fully updated FREE version of the enhanced "Money Plus" that is Win7 and backwards compatible and welcomes your previous versions data files. Check on the MS Money for the download and details.
My daughter's family & my son's family always ask for Turbotax Deluxe as a Christmas gift. I get them from Amazon, so I can put my $25 certificate toward the purchase.
I will be using Turbo Tax to prepare my return (and that of my family members)once again. I have used this product for many years, and have not had any problems. I was a beta tester for the 2010 season, (and have been a Beta tester for the past 5 years)and the folks at Intuit continue to do a nice job. The user interface is very clean, and with the free updates, you know your return will be as accurate as possible! I also use the State product as well, information that is in the federal return that is required in the state is automatically imported for you, saving time and reducing the chance for typing errors. I download all my stock transactions as well as my tax deductions captured in my Quicken software. I'm not an Intuit employee, just a satisfied customer, and someone who does not want to spend the money for updates in either Quicken or Turbo Tax so I volunteer to be a Beta tester. It also allows me to make suggestions for change, that are listened to and sometimes incorporated, that I would like to see in the software.
